The United Nations Human Rights Committee called on the UK on Thursday to drop a controversial plan that seeks to deport refugees to Rwanda, which may be enacted into law in the coming month.The committee also "regretted" the agreements made between the United Kingdom and certain third countries, notably Rwanda, to relocate asylum seekers. It criticized the UK's "efforts to adopt the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill despite the UK Supreme Court's ruling that the arrangement would not be compliant with international law."The UN body urged the British government to withdraw the bill or repeal it if it's passed, adding that it's "deeply concerned" about the legislation.The Conservative administration, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, aims to relocate thousands of asylum seekers who enter the UK on small, inflatable boats annually to live in Rwanda. However, legal obstacles have thus far hindered the deportation.The government faced a setback in its Rwanda plan: the UK's Supreme Court declared the policy unlawful last year, citing the potential risk of sending individuals back to their country of origin and compromising their safety.In order to address the court's concerns, the administration led by Sunak is seeking to enact a measure that designates Rwanda as a secure nation for those seeking asylum. The measure will be reexamined in parliament on April 15.Two weeks ago, the British media reported that The UK government intends to offer rejected asylum seekers a maximum payment of £3,000 (about $3,800) to relocate to Rwanda under a new voluntary scheme to clear the line of refugees.

The United Nations Human Rights Committee
called on the UK on Thursday to drop a controversial plan that seeks to deport refugees to Rwanda, which may be enacted into law in the coming month.
"The Committee urges the State party to: (a) Swiftly repeal the legislative provisions, including within the Illegal Migration Act 2023, that discriminate against migrants and that seek to limit access to rights for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in the State party on account of their “illegal entry or presence” [...]," the document read.
