Jacob Zuma is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from May 2009 to February 2018. He was planning to run for re-election this year until the country's electoral commission upheld objections to his candidacy.
Former South African President Jacob Zuma was involved in a traffic accident on Thursday in the country's province of KwaZulu-Natal, but wasn't injured, local media reported.
Local radio station SABC clarified that the accident occurred when Zuma was traveling from the town of Nkandla (where his private residence is located) in the KwaZulu-Natal province to the town of Eshowe in order to campaign for the opposition party Umkhonto we Sizwe.
According to reports, a car drove straight into the vehicle he was in during a convoy. The driver of the car has been arrested.
Zuma's daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, said on Friday that her father is in "high spirits" and attending church in Nkandla.
She and others are speculating that the accident was actually staged with the aim of harming the former president. However, there is no evidence of this yet, as the police are conducting an investigation.
On Thursday, election commission chairman Mosotho Moepya said South Africa's Electoral Commission had upheld objections to former President Jacob Zuma's candidacy in parliamentary elections, adding that the Umkhonto we Sizwe party, which nominated Zuma, had been informed of the decision.
Zuma can't run for the upcoming election due to a constitutional provision that stipulates that an individual who was sentenced for 12 months or more is ineligible for election for a period of 5 years. The ex-president was sentenced to 15 months in prison in June 2021 for his refusal to provide testimony to a panel probing financial wrongdoing and nepotism during his time in office.
The upcoming general elections in South Africa are scheduled for May 29. On that day, the citizens will have the opportunity to cast their votes for a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
