MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Niger has opened its land border with Nigeria, reciprocating Abuja's move almost a month after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) lifted its coup-related sanctions against Niamey, Nigerian newspaper Punch reported on Friday, citing local residents.
Nigeria opened its air and land border with Niger last week, according to media reports citing the Nigerian Presidency.
Now, one week later, Niger too reopened its side of the border, in Birni N'Konni city at noon, a local resident told the newspaper.
On February 24, the ECOWAS announced its decision to lift sanctions against Niger, including border closures, asset freezes and a ban on financial transactions.
The sanctions were imposed in late July 2023, a few days after Niger's presidential guard ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The guard's commander, Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani, proclaimed himself interim leader and the president of the caretaker National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. The new authorities immediately closed Niger's borders. Bazoum and several ministers in his government were detained by the coup leaders.
