MOSCOW (Sputnik/Prime) - Last August, amid anti-French demonstrations in Niger, the country's military authorities announced the cancellation of military agreements with France. In December 2023, the last French troops deployed in Niger left the country.
The Nigerien government has decided to terminate the military agreement with the United States, which allows US troops to remain on the territory of the African country, media reported, citing the spokesman for the military transitional government of Niger, Amadou Abdramane.
The decision was made after Niger secured the withdrawal of the French troops from its territory last December.

A coup took place in Niger on July 26, 2023. President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted and detained by his own guard, led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tiani. Following the coup, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended all cooperation with Niger and threatened an invasion if the rebels did not reinstate Bazoum.
In late February, the West African bloc announced its decision to remove some of the sanctions previously imposed on Niger. In late December, French radio RFI reported that Niger and ECOWAS were negotiating a transition period in the country.
