Following the military overthrow of Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba in August 2023, the country was suspended from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the African Union pending a "return to constitutional order".

On Saturday, representatives of the 11 ECCAS countries said they had witnessed "significant progress" in the process of returning to constitutional order in Gabon, "marked by popular support and the establishment of a timetable for a 24-month transition".
