In early January, authorities declared an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the central districts of Gomba, Ssembabule, Lyantonde and Lwengo, leading to work stoppages on livestock farms and the closure of abattoirs.
Ugandan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries banned the sale of meat in the capital, Kampala, as part of restrictions to prevent the outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease, the local media said.

"Movement of cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and their products and by-products from, to, through and within Kampala Capital City Authority, Kampala District, is prohibited until further notice," the ministry said in a letter, as quoted by media.

Authorities have also ordered the closure of livestock markets, abattoirs, loading docks and animal shows in the capital.
As the local media noted, Kampala is a major market for livestock products in Uganda and home to the country's five largest abattoirs.
The media added that the government's mass vaccination of animals continues, but is complicated by the proliferation of counterfeit vaccines. In February, Uganda's cabinet ordered the importation of 10 million doses of FMD vaccine.

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that causes blisters on the legs and mouth of an animal and can be transmitted to humans through direct or indirect physical contact.
Eating meat from an infected animal can lead to infection. Infected children can become seriously ill, in some cases dying, while adults tend to have less severe symptoms.
In January, President Yoweri Museveni said that Uganda is working with scientists in Botswana to develop an affordable foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.
