OUAGADOUGOU (Sputnik) - Last month, Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Nigeria's Access Bank Group, died in a helicopter crash in California, US. His wife and son, as well as Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, died with Wigwe.
Five people have been killed, and two people have been injured in a plane crash in Burkina Faso, the Burkinabe Ministry of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety has said.

"Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety Minister [Anuuyirtole Roland Somda] has expressed regret over the crash of an aircraft of private air carrier Lead'Air on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at about 12:45 pm," the ministry said in a communique on social media.

The aircraft was en route from Diapaga Airport to the town of Fada N'gourma in eastern Burkina Faso and was carrying seven people, including two crew members. The crash occurred during the takeoff from Diapaga Airport. Five people have been killed, and two others have been injured and taken to a medical center in the city of Diapaga as a result of the incident. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway, the ministry said.
The city of Diapaga is located near the country's border with Niger, and armed terrorist groups are operating in the area, attacking both civilians and Burkinabe security forces. Due to the activity of terrorist groups, supplies for the local population have to be transported under armed guard. Flying to Diapaga is considered the only safe way to reach the city.
