WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Zimbabwe has been subject to sanctions from the US and the EU for more than 20 years because of alleged abuses of human rights and a dearth of democracy. The United Nations and the Southern African Development Community claim that the sanctions hampered Zimbabweans' ability to get basic commodities.
The United States has imposed new sanctions against some of the most powerful persons and companies in Zimbabwe for their alleged engagement in corruption and human rights abuses, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said on Monday.

"Today, the United States is employing a new set of tools in Zimbabwe, including the flagship Global Magnitsky sanctions program, to make clear that the egregious behavior of some of the most powerful people and companies in Zimbabwe matches the actions of the worst human rights abusers and corrupt actors globally," Watson said in a statement.

The US Treasury Department sanctioned earlier three entities and 11 individuals in Zimbabwe, the statement said.
Among the sanctioned persons are Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, the statement added.
