WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - In late December of last year, Palestinian movement Hamas called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to investigate the abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini during a press conference confirmed that the agency has an internal report of Palestinian complaints of mistreatment while in Israeli custody after October 7.
"There is a report which has not been made public of hundreds of detainees," Lazzarini said on Monday. "We have seen these people in detention, some of them for a couple of weeks, some of them for a couple of months, and most of them coming back completely traumatized by the ordeal they have gone through."
Lazzarini said, citing their probe, that several Palestinians were allegedly obliged to have their photo taken naked, some were subject to verbal and psychological abuse, and others were threatened to be electrocuted.
Moreover, there have been many cases where Palestinian detainees were sleep-deprived or subject to extreme noise to prevent them from sleeping, Lazzarini said.
Dogs were also used by Israelis to intimidate Palestinian detainees, he added.
"There have been quite a number of various ways of putting people under pressure," Lazzarini said.
The age of the Palestinians allegedly abused by Israelis ranges from 15 to 80 years old, Lazzarini said.
