The announcement was made by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi during his four-day working visit to Algeria, where he also attended the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.
The Algerian government has pledged to support Mozambique's defense and security forces in the fight against Islamist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, said Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, quoted by Mozambique's news agency.
The leader noted that during his meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the delegations discussed forms of equipment and information exchange, adding that a document will be finalized to guide defense and security cooperation.
According to Nyusi, the Algerian government promised immediate support to local counterterrorism forces in the form of personalized equipment during the work on the guidance tool.
"They [the Algerians] were touched when they heard that some colleagues [veterans] were fighting terrorism underequipped," the Mozambican head of state said.
Regarding the fight against crime, Nyusi said that Algeria would help train police to fight kidnapping gangs in major cities.
The president also announced that Algeria would finance the construction of a national pantheon in honor of the heroes of Mozambique's struggle for independence, to be built in the capital, Maputo.

The terrorist groups Ansar al-Sunna and ISCAP (a branch of the Daesh*) have been operating in Cabo Delgado for several years, trying to take control of the territory of Mozambique.

The insurgency has prompted a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community, liberating districts near natural gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region.

Since 2017, more than 3,000 people have died at the hands of terrorists in the country's north, and 900,000 have become refugees, according to the United Nations.
*Daesh, also known as ISIL/ISIS/IS, is a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries.
