BUDAPEST (Sputnik) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday called the question of a winner in the Ukraine conflict unsolvable and called for a peaceful settlement.
Orban said earlier in February that Ukraine would not be able to secure victory over Russia in the conflict, no matter how many weapons and military aid the West delivered to Kiev. He said support for Ukraine has a very high political price for Europe, adding that no one there will believe in Kiev's ability to win the conflict at some point.

"Hungarians see that Russia will not defeat Ukraine, but neither will Ukraine, supported by the West, defeat Russia. In this situation, lives must be saved, and peace talks are needed as soon as possible. This is the Hungarian position," the MTI news agency quoted Orban as saying after a prime ministers' meeting of the Visegrad Group — a cultural and political alliance of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia — in Prague.

The Hungarian prime minister called the question of who would win the conflict a trap, as he believes it is unsolvable, and described the position that one of the parties in the conflict should be recognized as guilty and wrong in advance as a "bad" one.

"The question of guilt should be resolved after the war [...] I recommend everyone to adhere to strategic calmness on this matter," he said.

Orban reiterated Budapest's position that the Ukraine conflict would end only through negotiations and not on the battlefield. The prime minister also rejected claims that Hungary was allegedly in international isolation because of its policy toward Ukraine.
The prime minister added that Budapest has been providing humanitarian aid to Kiev but ruled out sending weapons and military personnel because it was in Hungary's interest "to have an entity between Russia and Hungary in the east."
"Hungary does not want to have a shared border with Russia again," Orban said.
Budapest, since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, has been consistently opposing sanctions on Russian energy and sending arms to Ukraine. In March 2022, Hungary's parliament banned the delivery of weapons to Ukraine from the country's soil.
Western countries have been providing military and financial aid to Kiev since the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The Kremlin has consistently warned against continued arms deliveries to Kiev, saying it would lead to further escalation of the conflict. In April 2022, Russia sent a diplomatic note to all NATO countries on the issue of arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russian strikes.
