'Highlighting Key Areas for Collaboration': Leaders of Ethiopia & Kenya Meet in Nairobi
14:53 28.02.2024 (Updated: 15:27 28.02.2024) Ethiopian leader Abiy Ahmed arrived in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Wednesday for a two-day visit and talks with Kenya's president. Last week, the governments of the two countries signed memorandums of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation and creating new avenues for expanding the partnership.
Kenyan President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed acknowledged the deep historical and economic ties between their nations and pledged to further strengthen cooperation, Ethiopian state media reported following the leaders' meeting.
The meeting marks a turning point in the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties, promising increased cooperation between Ethiopia and
Kenya in the future, the media outlet added.
The Ethiopian leader said on social media that the talks led to the outlining of areas of cooperation between the countries.
"Our comprehensive discussions today have not only strengthened our existing ties but also highlighted key areas for future collaboration," Ahmed pointed out. "As neighbors sharing a unified vision and destiny, our commitment to working together remains steadfast."
The Kenyan president, for his part, said that the Ethiopian prime minister's visit was aimed at "cementing" relations between the states, which are key to stability in East Africa.
"The long-standing relations between Kenya and Ethiopia is the bedrock of our shared prosperity and regional stability," Ruto wrote on X.
Ruto also revealed that he and the Ethiopian leader made a familiarization trip to the Suswa substation, which facilitates cross-border power transmission between Kenya and Ethiopia.
Earlier in the day, the President of Kenya gave the Prime Minister a tour of the ICT Park in Nairobi, highlighting the involvement of youth in artificial intelligence technologies.
Last week, Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, hosted the Joint Ministerial Commission meeting, which
culminated in the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the two countries in seven key areas.
