MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Former Guinean Minister of National Reconciliation and ex-Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has been appointed the country's new prime minister, the Guinean presidency said on Wednesday.
Guinea's transitional president, Gen. Mamady Doumbouya, dissolved the country's transitional government on February 19.
"Amadou Oury Bah, an economist, appointed the new prime minister, head of government," the presidency said on X.
On September 5, 2021, Doumbouya came to power through a coup in Guinea. The military dismissed the government, abrogated the constitution, and closed borders. Then-Guinean President Alpha Conde was arrested and, according to Doumbouya, placed in a safe place under military supervision.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended Guinea's membership in the organization and demanded that the president be released. Doumbouya was sworn in as transitional president by the Supreme Court on October 1 of that year, and pledged to remain committed to the country's sovereignty and to fulfill his functions in the interests of the Guinean people.
In January 2022, media reported that Guinea's provisional authorities had allowed Conde to leave the country under an agreement with ECOWAS.
