As BRICS takes a more prominent stance on the global arena, with more and more countries expressing their intention of joining the group, it is to no surprise that the West sees a strong opponent in the bloc to its "rules-based" world order. Albeit the West is an infamous exploiter of political and economic pressure, states all across the globe, save Argentina, happily accept BRICS' invitation.The legal practitioner believes that "educating and strengthening governments" in Africa is a necessary step in getting rid of the dependency on the dollar - something BRICS actively promotes.Unfortunately, the majority of Africa still trades using the US dollar, "which takes a lot of money from the continent." "The USA and UK are asking Nigeria through the IMF and World Bank, 'Don't get involved, don't be a member of BRICS.' But I've said in Nigeria, if Saudi Arabia can join BRICS, if UAE can join BRICS, Egypt can join BRICS, Nigeria has no excuse," Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Legal Practitioner, Falana & Falana’s Chambers, says.
The legal practitioner believes that "educating and strengthening governments" in Africa is a necessary step in getting rid of the dependency on the dollar - something BRICS actively promotes.
"Right now, the members of BRICS should intensify the campaign for the membership of the organization, so that countries will have the courage to challenge the dominance of the dollar in the interests of their own economies," he explains.
Unfortunately, the majority of Africa still trades using the US dollar, "which takes a lot of money from the continent." Mr. Falana believes that African currencies are "devalued at the instance of the IMF and World Bank."
"For me, Africans have to rise, fight against the hypocrisy of the countries and institutions that are currently controlling international trade. And we must push the African Union to launch a major campaign for a new international economic order that will benefit the peoples of Africa. concludes," he concludes.
