Burkina Faso Suspends Export Permit for Artisanal Gold Production
15:36 21.02.2024 (Updated: 15:54 21.02.2024) Burkina Faso, along with Mali, ranked second among African countries in gold mine production in 2023, with 60 cubic meters, both just behind South Africa, according to the Statista portal.
Burkina Faso's Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries announced in a statement the suspension of export permits for artisanal and semi-mechanized gold and other precious stones.
The ministry said that the decision was based on the need to better regulate
the sale of valuable substances.
"This suspension follows the need for sanitation in the sector and reflects the government's desire to better organize the marketing of gold and other precious substances," the statement said.
The government added that during the suspension period, miners who have gold to export should contact the National Society of Precious Substances for compensation.
Last March, the government ordered the closure of 43 gold mining sites due to safety concerns.
According to the Enhancing Africa's Response to Transnational Organized Crime (ENACT) NGO project for 2022, Burkina Faso's artisanal
gold mining sector provides income for some 700,000 people - 13 times more than formal gold workers who are amounted by 52,000 - and is central to the country's gross domestic product.
