MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The President Macky Sall's recent announcement to delay the elections originally planned for the end of February resulted in demonstrations in the capital, during which three individuals reportedly lost their lives.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is "deeply concerned" about the situation in Senegal following the postponement of the presidential election, with at least three people killed and another 266 arrested during protests, OHCHR spokesperson Liz Throssell said on Tuesday.
"We are deeply concerned about the tense situation in Senegal following suspension of the presidential election slated for 25 February. Following reports of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force against protesters and restrictions on civic space, we call on the authorities to ensure that they uphold Senegal’s long-held tradition of democracy and respect for human rights. At least three young men were killed during protests and at least 266 people have reportedly been arrested across the country, including journalists," Throssell said in a statement.
The Senegalese authorities must order law enforcement agencies to respect and uphold human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, amid rising tensions and reports of further planned protests, she added. Throssell also called on all parties involved to refrain from the use of violence during the protests.

Senegalese Opposition Activist Sonko May Soon Be Released Under Amnesty, Reports Say
Last week, the Senegalese security forces fired tear gas to disperse a demonstration outside the parliament building, which was called by the opposition to protest the postponement of the presidential election. The government suspended mobile internet access as of Sunday evening, citing "hate messages posted on social media."
Earlier in February, the country's parliament adopted a bill rescheduling this month's presidential election to December 15, 2024. Opposition lawmakers were removed from the parliamentary session hall during the vote.
