Zambian Schools Reopen Amid Cholera Outbreak Mitigation
14:37 12.02.2024 (Updated: 15:23 12.02.2024) The reopening of schools in the southern African nation has been postponed for five weeks as part of a series of precautionary measures to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.
Zambia's schools reopen on Monday as the government's response to cholera is bearing fruit and will continue to do so, according to a statement from the Zambian Ministry of Education.
The ministry assured that it would continue to inspect schools in all 10 provinces of the country, with a special focus on the capital, Lusaka, the epicenter of the
cholera outbreak.
The authorities added that the ministry has made it mandatory for schools to provide clean and safe water that is readily available to students, and has also recommended the installation of chlorinators.
"The Minister has urged all parents and guardians and the country at large to not only preach cleanliness but to always take practical steps in ensuring that all surroundings are clean," the ministerial statement said.
Schools were initially scheduled to open on January 8, but the ministry
postponed the opening to January 29 and then to February 12 due to a surge in cholera cases.
The latest update from the Zambian Ministry of Health showed a decrease in new cholera cases, with 145 cases reported on February 11, down from 163 the previous day.
The southern African country has recorded 18,407 cases and 647 deaths since the cholera outbreak in October last year.
