Armenian Prime Minister Denies NATO Membership Plans
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has denied that the South Caucasus nation is eyeing a path to NATO membership, despite the ongoing revision of its partnership with the military alliance.
Speaking with the UK's media, Pashinyan stressed that
NATO membership "is not a question we have discussed or are discussing."
NATO and Armenia have a history of bilateral cooperation going back to the 1994 Partnership for Peace program.
Armenia’s program of cooperation with NATO was also set out in an Individual Partnership Action Plan.
Pashinyan said in the interview, published on Sunday, that the Armenia-NATO cooperation framework was being revised but insisted that it would not require
NATO membership.
Pashinyan also suggested that his country could rethink its membership of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
"There are some discussions in Armenia as to whether or to what extent the alliance-based strategy is consistent with Armenia’s longer term interests," he told the outlet.
