BUDAPEST (Sputnik) - Hungarian President Katalin Novak announced her resignation on Saturday, saying she "made a mistake" in April 2023 by pardoning a man involved in a child sexual abuse case.
Hungary has recently been struck by a sex abuse scandal, as Novak turned out to have granted, ahead of Pope Francis' visit to Budapest in April 2023, a petition for pardon for a former deputy chief of an orphanage who had been involved in covering up crimes committed by a pedophile principal. The Hungarian opposition has urged Novak to resign.

"I am addressing you today for the last time as head of state. I am resigning the presidency of the republic," Novak said on the air of Hungarian broadcaster M1.

Novak was elected president of Hungary in March 2022, making her the first female to hold this post in the country. Thus, she served as president for almost two years.
