The EFF also reiterated its support for Palestine's statehood and the struggle against Israel.Since the advent of democratic South Africa in 1994, the African National Congress (ANC) has consistently won general elections, won a majority in the lower house of parliament, and formed the government. The ANC leader has also served as head of state.

Cooperation With Russia & Ending Load Shedding: Highlights From SA's EFF Election Manifesto
11:06 11.02.2024 (Updated: 11:29 11.02.2024) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the third largest party in the South African National Assembly, behind the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the opposition Democratic Alliance, on Saturday unveiled the party's manifesto for this year's elections.
In their
election manifesto, the Economic Freedom Fighters highlighted 33 areas of South African life and offered their vision for addressing and transforming the challenges they face.
Sputnik Africa provides key points from the EFF's election program.
Load Shedding Elimination
The party outlined a multi-pronged approach to reforming the energy sector, which saw a record number of load shedding days in 2023.
"The EFF government will ensure the security of electricity supply for at least the next 20 years, emulating successful models like that of China, to foster national sovereignty and sustainable economic growth," the manifesto read.
Key elements of the plan include repairing and modernizing the existing power plant fleet, deploying clean coal technologies, and reducing electricity demand through economically sustainable strategies.
The manifesto also calls for an end to the privatization of
Eskom (the state-owned company that supplies about 90% of the nation’s electricity), the consolidation of generation, transmission and distribution under one company to stabilize supply, and the use of a diverse mix of energy sources.
In addition, EFF is advocating for a global partnership, particularly with Russia, to build a nuclear power plant in South Africa that will generate between 3,000 and 6,000 MW of electricity under a 20-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract and will also "symbolize a significant step towards energy independence and sustainable development."
The Economic Freedom Fighters also called for a review of the central bank's policies, including regular audits of the central bank to ensure compliance with "national economic policies," along with the nationalization of the institution.
"The EFF government will nationalize the Reserve Bank and discontinue its private ownership to be in line with the more than 80% state-owned central banks across the world," the manifesto read.
The party would
also present a law prohibiting the employment of former central bank governors and deputy governors in commercial credit organizations and other institutions supervised by the central bank.
Another issue was the proposal to introduce a tiered tax system for foreign investment, with higher rates for short-term, speculative investments and lower rates for long-term, sustainable investments that contribute to the country's development.
In the defense sector, the EFF advocated for an increase in the budget of the National Defense Forces (SANDF) to meet the military's proposals and carry out a comprehensive modernization program.
The party also promised military cooperation with Beijing and Moscow for technological exchanges and joint ventures.
"The EFF government will ensure that the military collaborates with progressive countries such as China and Russia to transfer knowledge, create joint ventures, and facilitate technological exchange," the manifesto reads.
In addition, the fighters proposed increased investment in advanced surveillance systems, communication networks, and cybersecurity capabilities to enhance the SANDF's situational awareness and rapid response capabilities, and pledged to actively contribute to regional and international peacekeeping operations.
With regards to international relations, the Economic Freedom Fighters reiterate support for
Moscow in the conflict against Ukraine and NATO.
"The EFF government will continue to be on the side of Russia in a war against NATO disguised as Ukraine that seeks to expand its territory in Ukraine in order to get closer to Russia," the manifesto read.
The party has also advocated the closure of
foreign bases that "are on stand-by to monitor and displace the owners of the land at the sight of the discovery of minerals."
The manifesto made special mention of the United States, with the party saying it would never support a body that enjoys the protection of Washington. The EFF also reiterated its support for Palestine's statehood and the struggle against Israel.
South Africa's next general election will be held in 2024, and the outcome will determine not only the composition of the lower house and government, but also the nation's president.
Since the advent of democratic South Africa in 1994, the African National Congress (ANC) has consistently won general elections, won a majority in the lower house of parliament, and formed the government. The ANC leader has also served as head of state.
