MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A foreign agent in Russia is a person or an entity deemed by the Russian government to receive funding from abroad while participating in political activities in the country, disseminating information in mass media, or collecting military industry information within the borders of Russia.
The Russian lower house is discussing a possible bill that would ban local companies from placing advertisements on online platforms of foreign agents to completely deprive the latter of all sources of income in the country, house Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said on Saturday.
"The State Duma [the Russian lower house] is discussing a bill that would ban citizens and local companies, regardless of their form of ownership, from advertising on foreign agents' websites, their social networks and other online platforms. Lawmakers believe it is necessary to deprive foreign agents of all sources of income in our country," Volodin said on Telegram.
People in Russia are angered that bloggers who act in the interests of unfriendly states and "pour mud on our country" can still make money from Russian citizens and companies, he added.
The state imposes a number of restrictions and requirements on the activities of foreign agents. Some of the celebrities on the list include actor Artur Smolyaninov, author Dmitry Bykov, rock singer Zemfira Ramazanova, and science fiction author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
