On Saturday, Senegal's incumbent President Macky Sall, who is not seeking re-election, postponed the February 25 election indefinitely, just hours before the official campaign was due to begin. Later on Monday, lawmakers in Senegal's parliament voted to extend Sall's mandate by six months, until December 15.
Following the postponement of Senegal's presidential election by incumbent President Macky Sall, a group of candidates has filed a complaint with the Constitutional Council, Mamadou Diao, one of the candidates, told Sputnik.
According to Diao, the Senegalese leader's decree violates the provisions of the country's constitution.
"There were eight of us candidates who filed the appeal, and the others will do the same. We formed a collective with a pool of lawyers [...]. We were able to file an appeal with the Constitutional Council, asking it to play its full role because it is the arbiter of the electoral process," he explained.
Given the inviolability of the president's mandate, which is enshrined in the constitution, "we asked him to assume his responsibilities and consider the decree that was adopted as illegal," Diao added.

The candidates concerned are now planning to meet and discuss the results of the vote in the National Assembly, which supported the extension of President Sall's mandate for six months, until December 15, the candidate said. He went on to say that these decisions are "illegal because there is no provision that allows the Assembly to extend the mandate of the President of the Republic, even by one second."

A Plot to Change the Election Rules?

In announcing the postponement of the presidential elections, the Head of State called for an "open national dialogue". However, El Hadji Mamadou Diao expressed his concerns.

"We have a lot of uncertainties about this dialogue, because from what we've learned about the project that is underway, there is a desire to change the rules, particularly on sponsorship. They want to get rid of citizen sponsorship. After that, only candidates from parties represented in the National Assembly would be allowed to participate in the elections. In other words, the elections will no longer be inclusive."

According to him, other changes are also planned without any "legal basis."
