UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - On Saturday night, the United States said it had hit over 85 targets linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated forces in Iraq and Syria in response to the recent attack on a US military base in Jordan.
Russia has requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on February 5 after the deadly US strikes on Iraq and Syria, Russian Deputy Envoy to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Saturday.
"Russia has just called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to discuss threats to international peace and security from the US strikes against Iraq and Syria. The meeting is expected to be held at 4 pm EST [21:00 GMT] on February 5," Polyansky said on X.
At least 16 people were killed and 25 others injured in the US strikes against Iraqi territory alone, the Iraqi government said. Following the strikes, the Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee called on the country's authorities to quickly sign an agreement on the withdrawal of the international coalition troops from the country.
