Kenya Opens Fund to Support Peacekeeping Operations
13:17 02.02.2024 (Updated: 13:26 02.02.2024) The Ksh1 billion ($6.2 million) peacekeeping optimization fund was approved by the Kenyan Parliament in the summer of 2023, and by the Cabinet in October.
Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Defense Aden Duale has launched the National Peace Support Operations Fund at Kahawa Garrison, Nairobi, the ministry of defense said.
According to the ministry, the fund is meant to sustain Kenya's defense forces in
peacekeeping missions around the world, achieve the required international standards, and improve the condition of the force.
In his remarks at the launch of the fund, the secretary noted the East African nation's prominent role in maintaining peace on the continent.
"Our involvement in Peace Support Operations across the continent and beyond has been both notable and transformative. The establishment of this Fund is a decisive response to ensure our peacekeepers are well prepared, suitably equipped, and able to meet Kenya’s obligations in the maintenance of international peace and security," Duale said as quoted by the ministry.
The fund will also enhance Kenya's role on the world stage, strengthen economic prospects and promote international cooperation, the secretary added.
He was echoed by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, who said changes in the global security environment have affected peacekeeping in various ways, making the fund a strategic asset that should "unequivocally" enhance military capability, efficiency and effectiveness.
"Terrorism and violent extremism have made peacekeeping very dangerous and demanding. Peacekeepers today operate in an environment where they themselves are targets, which calls for their preparedness, training, and well-equipped with modern war-fighting equipment," Ogolla said.
As for Kenya's peacekeeping efforts, in October the East African country's parliament
ratified the deployment of about 1,000 Kenyan police officers to Haiti to help establish security in the country.
