The UN World Food Program (WFP) estimates that 20 million people in Ethiopia are acutely food insecure and require urgent aid. Of these, 9 million people in the conflict-affected regions of Tigray, Afar and Amhara, and 7.4 million people in drought-affected areas of southern and southeastern Ethiopia are facing severe hunger and malnutrition.
Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, was honored with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Agricola Medal in Rome, in recognition of his government's commitment to
food security and nutrition, as well as its pursuit of innovative solutions in wheat self-sufficiency.
The prestigious award recognizes individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to sustainable food production, global food security, and international cooperation.
Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Ahmed expressed his gratitude for the recognition and stressed his administration's focus on high-value and industrial crops, which is
yielding promising results in achieving food sovereignty.
This achievement is particularly significant as Ethiopia grapples with one of the most severe droughts in decades, leading to an
urgent need for food assistance for nearly 4 million Ethiopians.
