Algeria Concerned Over Mali's Decision to End Peace Deal With Tuareg Separatists
08:44 27.01.2024 (Updated: 09:05 27.01.2024) ALGIERS (Sputnik) - The Algerian Foreign Ministry on Friday voiced deep concern over the decision of Mali’s government to end the 2015 peace agreement with Tuareg separatists.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Malian authorities had ended the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, also known as the
Algiers Agreement.
"Algeria expresses its deep regret and concern over the decision made by Mali’s authorities to terminate the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, resulting from the Algiers process," the ministry’s statement read.
The decision is "dangerous for
Mali and for the entire region, which seeks to maintain peace and stability," the Algerian ministry said.
In December 2023, the Malian Foreign Ministry expelled the Algerian ambassador due to his "interference with [Mali’s] internal affairs." Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop said that the meetings between top Algerian officials and persons opposing the current Malian government hindered normal relations between the countries.
Mali has been embroiled in an armed conflict between government forces, separatist militants and
Islamist groups since 2012. More than a decade of violent conflict in the country has led to persistent insecurity, climatic shocks, massive displacement and a dire humanitarian situation. The UN estimates that around 8.8 million people in Mali are in need of humanitarian assistance.
