Niger, Russia Agree to Review Energy Agreements and Extend Them, PM Says

The Niger delegation, led by the country's Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, is currently on a visit to Moscow, where it held several meetings with Russian authorities to discuss existing cooperation and its potential.
Niger and Russia have agreed to review and extend old energy contracts, the West African country's prime minister said.

“In the energy sector, an agreement was reached with Russia on the revision of old agreements and their extension,” the Nigerien prime minister said at a press conference.

According to him, one of the goals of his visit to Moscow is to strengthen cooperation with Russia in the field of healthcare and nuclear medicine.
"Niger is interested in strengthening cooperation with the BRICS countries... and has good relations with Russia and China," he said.
During a meeting with Zeine in Moscow, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, expressed interest in expanding trade, economic, and investment ties as well as trade turnover with Niger.
According to Overchuk, Niger is regarded by Russia as "a friendly state with which mutually beneficial constructive relations have been established for a long time."

Also this week, Lieutenant General Salifou Mody, Niger's Defense Minister, told Sputnik in an exclusive interview that the country's fight against terrorism has improved since the withdrawal of French forces.
At the end of July 2023, the Niger military announced on national television that President Mohamed Bazoum had been removed from power. The commander of the presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tiani, appeared on state TV as the head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, formed by the coup forces.
Leaders of most Western countries and the regional organization ECOWAS condemned the coup. In early August, participants in an emergency meeting of the Chiefs of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the ECOWAS countries, held in Abuja, adopted a plan for military intervention in Niger.
