As we wait for the ICJ to announce its ruling on South Africa's genocide case against Israel, a group of South African lawyers decided to file a lawsuit against the US and the UK for supporting Israel. AfroVerdict host joins the initiator of this lawsuit to get insight into the case and implications thereof for the international community.
The group of about 50 South African lawyers believe that their case will be a "warning" to countries that support a state which is "unjustified in its conduct", according to Mr. Wikus van Rensburg, Initiator of the legal case against the US and the UK, Founder of Wikus van Rensburg Attorneys.

"In the field of international law, it will put out a warning there that there is accountability to those nations that support a nation, which is unjustified in its conduct. At least we will have justice out there, so people can approach the courts to show [...] there's somewhere where [they] can go and get relief," Mr. Van Rensburg explains.

Having grown up during apartheid in South Africa and with a background as a "specialist in labour law and conflict resolution," the lawyer is confident in their case is "extremely strong".

"As lawyers, our approach is, your case is as strong as your facts. You can have as many lawyers as you want. If your facts don't support your case, you're not going to win. America can have all the lawyers in America be involved in because it's not going to change, ultimately, the facts of the case," he says.

Mr. Van Rensburg explains that the case will be a "class action", which is when the plaintiff (or group of plaintiffs) brings a lawsuit on behalf of a group of people or class, Palestinians in Gaza in this case.
"So we will be fighting not only for a handful of individuals, but for the entire population of Gaza and, possibly, also the West Bank," he states.
