MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States imported almost 37,000 barrels of oil from Russia in October 2023, marking the first batch bought in a year and a half, with another 10,000 barrels purchased in November, Sputnik has calculated using US customs data.
Washington imposed a ban on oil and other energy imports from Russia in March 2022 as part of a new round of sanctions. US companies bought the last batch of Russian oil in April of that year.
Last October, the US purchased 36,800 barrels of oil from Russia worth $2.7 million. The next month, the country bought 9,900 barrels for $750,000. In both cases, oil was purchased for internal consumption.
One barrel of Russian oil cost the US $74 in October and $76 in November, well above the price cap set by Washington and its allies.
In December 2022, the Group of Seven countries, Australia and the European Union imposed a price cap of $60 per barrel on Russian crude oil transported by sea in response to Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. Russia responded by prohibiting selling its oil to countries supporting the price cap.
