MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Last year, Russia increased the number of supplies of agricultural products to 101 friendly countries, including a number of African countries, where grain was delivered completely free of charge.
Russia exported more than 1.5 million tonnes of grain in the period from January 1-9, 2024, an increase of 155,000 tonnes year-on-year, the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) said Wednesday.
"The volume of shipments of Russian grain products in the period from January 1 to January 9, 2024, exceeded 1.5 million tonnes (+155,000 tonnes compared to the same period of 2023)," the watchdog said in a statement.
Last year, Russian grain products were exported to 101 countries, Rosselkhoznadzor said. In 2023, there was an increase in deliveries to friendly countries, including China, Brazil, Tanzania, Yemen, Bangladesh and Tunisia, as well as new markets in Africa, South Asia, South-East and East Asia.
The service added that wheat, barley, corn and soybeans were the main export crops.

Furthermore, speaking of grain export, Russia does not yet see any prospects for resuming the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko said in an interview with Sputnik.

"The grain deal, as you remember, was of a package nature. It included a basic agreement on the security of maritime transportation, and an agreement to it that solved problems related to bank transfers, maritime logistics, freight, insurance, and the connection of Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system," Abramchenko said.

She said there was no substantial progress on the additional agreement.

"I would like to emphasize that the memorandum itself has not been terminated, unlike the basic agreement. The diplomatic department continues to work on this document. This work is progressing, although with difficulty. As for the main document, the agreement is not in force, and we do not see any prospects for its resumption yet," Abramchenko said.

The Turkey- and UN-mediated Black Sea Grain Initiative, signed in July 2022, which provided for a humanitarian corridor to allow safe sea exports of Ukrainian and Russian agricultural products and fertilizers, expired July 18, 2023, after Russia refused to extend its participation, citing persistent violation of the package deal's component to facilitate Russian grain and fertilizer exports.
The grain deal was an integral part of a package agreement. The second part — the Russia-UN memorandum, designed for three years — envisioned the unblocking of Russian exports of food and fertilizers, the reconnection of the Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank) to SWIFT, the resumption of supplies of agricultural machinery, spare parts and services, the restoration of the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline and a number of other measures. Moscow repeatedly said this part of the package agreement was not being implemented.
