The EU threatens African states with withdrawal of cooperation within the EU-ACP agreement, if the countries do not make provisions for LGBT* rights in their countries. AfroVerdict host sits down with the founder of a civil society organisation that calls for the abandonment of this agreement to discuss why LGBT trends are frowned upon in Africa.
The stories of numerous young inmates in prisons can be traced back to "broken families", according to Ben Abraham, Esq., Founder of Zarephath Aid, a Nigerian Non Government, Non-political and Nonprofit Organization.
Due to the absence of "safety nets", such as "social security" and "mortgage systems", Africans rely on their families for support.
"When people have problems in Africa, the first place they are going to is the family," Mr. Abraham says.
In November 2023, Nigeria along with several other countries refused to sign the LGBT agreement. This move was followed by the EU threatening the countries that refused to sign with dire consequences once the agreement comes into force.
These consequences include the elimination of EU funding, development assistance and program implementation.
Mr. Abraham believes that policies and practices that project the LGBTQ trend be viewed "from a cultural perspective".

"In Europe where you are and in America this practice is upheld [...] But when it comes down to Africa, we are saying, the promotion of these values will work inimically against the family setup. It's going to work against the family setup," Mr. Abraham explains.
