TOKYO (Sputnik) - The number of people killed in a powerful earthquake and a series of aftershocks that hit Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture last week has exceeded 200 people, the Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the local administration.
Earlier reports indicated that 180 people were killed and 565 were injured.
The largest number of victims was recorded in the cities of Suzu and Wajima — 91 and 81 people, respectively. The total number of deaths to date is 202 people.
On January 1, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake, followed by a series of aftershocks, struck near the city of Suzu on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. The quake became the most powerful for the Noto Peninsula region since records began in 1885.
