Putin Says EAEU Leaders Agree to Hold 2024 Anniversary Summit in Moscow
ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) - On Monday, the leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union — the heads of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan — have gathered in St. Petersburg to assess the results of Russian presidency of the union and gauge opportunities for further economic integration among the five member states.
The leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries have agreed to hold the anniversary summit next year in Moscow, Russian President
Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
"As we have noted more than once that next year marks the 10th anniversary of the conclusion of the fundamental treaty of the EAEU, and we have now agreed that, given that this is an anniversary event, everyone agreed with my proposal to hold a summit dedicated to this anniversary in Moscow in May 2024," Putin said during an expanded meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
This summit "will open a new decade of close joint work to deepen integration, improve the well-being and quality of life of the citizens of all countries,"
Putin added. Moreover, the participants discussed the acceptance of a new member of the union: Russia expects that the EAEU countries will promptly complete the ratification procedures to include
Iran in the structure.
"We look forward to the prompt implementation by all member states of the relevant ratification procedures," Putin said.
Apart from that, all the members of EAEU Council agreed to approve the declaration, which is a policy document.
"This idea was supported, all members of the Supreme Council agreed to approve the declaration, and we will formalize the corresponding decision following the results of our meeting. In fact, the declaration is a new document of a program nature, which provides for steps to increase joint efforts in key sectors, as well as identifies additional areas of interaction," Putin stated.
Russian president also underlined that cooperation within the union is developing in all directions, despite the difficulties and tensions in the world
"It is important that the share of national currencies in mutual settlements has exceeded 90% and this figure will undoubtedly grow in the future, taking into account the joint measures taken by our countries in the financial sector," Putin said.
Lastly, Putin wished
Armenia good luck in chairing the EAEU in 2024.
"Dear friends, starting January 1, Russia will transfer the chairmanship of the EAEU to Armenia. I would like to wish success to our Armenian colleagues and friends. Of course, we will provide them with all the necessary assistance," the head of Russia added.
The leaders will also attend a two-day
informal meeting of the heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States, an intergovernmental organization that brings together former
Soviet nations.
