The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) now consists of 11 countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. Putin noted that de facto Moldova and Ukraine have long been nominal participants and are not involved in the work of the association.
Sputnik Africa goes live as Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding an informal pre-New Year's summit with CIS leaders in St. Petersburg.
The meeting is a traditional format of communication between the heads of state, who for many years have gathered in the Russian cultural capital in the last days of December. Putin described such meetings as conversations "in a circle of friends" where the business agenda - regional and international - is discussed.
