MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has suspended assistance to more than 800,000 people in some parts of the Sudanese state of Gezira due to fighting, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing a WFP statement.
According to the WFP, about 300,000 people have fled the Sudanese state since December 15 when clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group broke out.
On Tuesday, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group in Sudan, said his troops had taken full control of the town of Madani, the capital of Al Gezira State, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Sudan's capital, Khartoum.
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have confirmed that their troops have left Madani, a former capital of the North African country, saying that they are investigating the causes of this situation. The state of Al Gezira, colloquially referred to as the "granary of Sudan," holds strategic significance for nationwide access.

Sudan's RSF Commander Dagalo Says Group Seized Control Of Center of Gezira State
Although Dagalo said that civilians in the city would remain protected and that the administration and functioning of the state would be left to civilian leaders, thousands of people continue to flee the region for their safety.
Violent clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF erupted in April. Since then, the parties to the conflict have implemented a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none have helped to resolve the conflict. In late October, the parties resumed negotiations mediated by Saudi Arabia, but hostilities continued in the country.
Earlier this month, mediators reportedly suspended talks between the Sudanese army and RSF indefinitely after fighting intensified in central Sudan.
