ISTANBUL (Sputnik) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has offered his condolences to the family of Turkish courier Yunus Emre Gocer, who died in a car accident caused by the president’s son, who has allegedly been fleeing from justice, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.
Last week, the president said his son was not fleeing from justice and had left Turkey for business reasons.
The Hurriyet newspaper reported that Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur met with the deceased Turk’s family lawyer, Iyaz Cimen, and the victim's wife, Oznur Gocer. During the meeting, the Somali president called the minister to offer his condolences, according to the report.
"Our respect is endless. Everything will be done as needed, all the procedures," the Somali president was quoted as saying by Hurriyet.
On December 14, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said he had met with his Somali counterpart to discuss the incident and the need to hold the president’s son to account. He added that legal action would be taken within days.
On November 30, Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of the Somali president, reportedly crashed into Gocer with his car, inflicting severe damage on him. On December 2, the president’s son reportedly left Turkey. Later, on December 6, the courier died in the hospital. Two days later, the Turkish prosecution issued an international arrest warrant for the president’s son.
