MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The escalating conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas since early October has killed more than a thousand people in Israel and nearly 20,000 in Gaza, and displaced millions.
The number of those killed as a result of Israel shelling the Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip has exceeded 100, Munir al-Boursh, the undersecretary of the health ministry of the Gaza Strip, said on Monday.
On Sunday, Al Arabiya broadcaster reported that at least 90 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the refugee camp.
"Over 100 people died in Jabalia, another 100 remain under the rubble and 20 are injured," the official was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera broadcaster.
On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, breaching the border and killing and taking captives in nearby Israeli military sites and communities. The movement said its operation, Al-Aqsa Flood, was in response to Israeli provocations and occupation of Palestinian territories.
Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion into Gaza, ostensibly to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.

Special Tribunal Could Be Needed to Address 'Impunity' in Gaza: UN Official
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said on Monday that a special tribunal could be needed to oversee events in Gaza, saying the impunity for killing humanitarian workers "has never been greater."

"The impunity that goes along with the choosing of war as your first option has never been greater. And the impunity for killing humanitarian aid workers has never been greater... Impunity we have seen rampant in this war... Maybe there is a need for a special tribunal [for Gaza]," Griffiths was quoted as saying by the British newspaper.

He added that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was the "worst ever" and was on the verge of entering a new phase, as it is a "disease, hunger that is beginning to be the lead cause of death and deprivation." Griffiths added that suffering in the enclave was "terrible" and would get worse.

Pope Francis Says Two Civilians Killed in Gaza City's Only Catholic Parish
Pope Francis on Sunday announced that two civilians in the Gaza Strip had been killed by Israeli shooting on the territory of the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, the only Catholic parish in the enclave.
"I continue receiving very serious and sad news about Gaza. Unarmed civilians are targets for bombs and gunfire. And this has happened even within the parish complex of the Holy Family, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick and have disabilities, sisters. A mother and her daughter, Mrs. Nahida Khalil Anton and her daughter Samar Kamal Anton, were killed, and other people were wounded by the shooters while they were going to the bathroom," the pontiff said after his sermon at Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City.
The pope also said that the neighboring house of the Sisters of Mother Teresa had been damaged and their generator had been hit.
"Some are saying, ‘This is terrorism and war’. Yes, it is war, it is terrorism," the pope added, calling for peace in the Holy Land.

Turkey Using All Mechanisms to Hold Israel Accountable for Actions in Gaza, Erdogan Says
Turkey is using all available mechanisms to hold the Israeli government accountable for its actions in the Gaza Strip during the military operation against Hamas, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.
Last week, lawyers for the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey said that the country had filed a lawsuit against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing him of "committing genocide" in the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday, Erdogan called Israel a "terrorist state," adding that Netanyahu possesses nuclear weapons but "[his] end is near."
"We will not hesitate to use all available mechanisms to hold Israeli leaders accountable before the law and history," Erdogan said during an international ceremony celebrating the 750th anniversary of prominent poet and philosopher Rumi.
