According to the Uganda's Government Citizen Interaction Center (GCIC), the number of crimes rose more than 18% in 2022 compared to 2021. The increase was mainly due to an upsurge in property-related crimes and assaults, cases of domestic violence increased by 1% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
A 110-year-old Dominic Babiiha from Uganda was accused of stabbing his 109-year-old wife, Costansio Bakasisa over denying conjugal rights, media reported, citing the police of the country's Ntungamo District.
"It is alleged that at around 8pm on December 14, the deceased had turned down his husband's request to join him in bed because she was feeling weak and had a cough, and that the two peasants went to sleep in separate rooms with the deceased moving in with her two great-grandchildren," Police Spokesperson, Samson Kasasira said.
According to the police, on Friday morning, one of the couple's granddaughters entered Babiiha's room after hearing his claims that "he wouldn't die alone," there she found the man armed with a billhook. The suspect ordered the grandchild to leave the room, Kasasira said.
"It's then that the suspect immediately started stabbing the deceased multiple times, which forced the other great-grandchild to run out and seek help from neighbors," the spokesperson added.
When the neighbors arrived, they found Bakasisa dead, while Babiiha locked himself in a room where he was found unconscious with a bottle of an agrochemical beside him, the police revealed. The crime scene was documented, and the murder weapon was confiscated by the authorities, the media said.
The GCIC revealed that the overall crime rate in the country grew by 18% in 2022 compared to 2021, with 1% increase in cases of domestic violence.
