Live Updates: IDF Says Destroyed Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon in Response to Launches

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The armed confrontation between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, now in its third month, has left more than a thousand Israelis dead, nearly 20,000 Palestinians dead, mostly children, and tens of thousands injured.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it destroyed Lebanese movement Hezbollah's targets in Lebanon in response to recent launches.
"In response to the recent launches, IAF aircraft struck and destroyed a series of Hezbollah terror targets in Lebanon. Among the targets struck were terrorist infrastructure, a command and control center, and military sites in which Hezbollah terrorists were operating," the IDF said on Telegram on Friday.
It said that the IDF also struck a launch post from which launches toward Israel had been identified earlier in the day using the precise 'Iron Sting' munition.
On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, breaching the border and killing and taking captives in nearby Israeli military sites and communities. The movement said its operation, Al-Aqsa Flood, was in response to Israeli provocations and occupation of Palestinian territories.
Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion into Gaza, ostensibly to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.
Later, Qatar mediated a deal between Israel and Hamas on a temporary truce and the exchange of some of the prisoners and hostages, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. The truce was extended several times, but on Friday, the fighting was resumed.
The escalation of the conflict has resulted in the deaths of some 1,200 people in Israel and more than 18,700, mostly children and women, in Gaza. Millions more Gazans have been displaced.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, UN Delegation Discuss Situation in Middle East
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has discussed with senior UN officials this week the situation in the Middle East and access to global markets for Russian foods and fertilizers, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
"On December 14, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister S. V. Vershinin held a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths. An exchange of views on humanitarian crisis situations, with a focus on the state of affairs in the countries of the Middle East region, took place," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Vershinin and Griffiths have discussed the current situation in "occupied Palestinian territory and, first and foremost, in the Gaza Strip," noting the need for an immediate ceasefire and provision of unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to civilians in the conflict-torn enclave, the statement also said.
The Russian deputy foreign minister also met with UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan that same day to discuss the issue of ensuring unhindered access of Russian fertilizers and food products to global market, which continues to be undermined by the Western sanctions against Moscow.
"The sides also paid special attention to free humanitarian supplies of Russian grain and fertilizers to the world's poorest countries," the statement added.

“We agree with the Israelis that this conflict could go on for months,” Kirby said during a press briefing.
During his meetings with Israeli officials earlier this week, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan talked about the importance of transitioning to a new, different phase of the military operation in Gaza that would entail more targeted and precise strikes in scope and scale, Kirby added.

Details of Opening Kerem Shalom Border Crossing Still Worked Out - UN Spokesperson
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - The details about the opening of the Kerem Shalom border crossing to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip are still being worked on, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
"Those details [when crossing Kerem Shalom will be opened] are still being worked out," Dujarric said during a press briefing on Friday.
The United Nations is in contact with Israel’s agency in charge of allowing access to Gaza, Dujarric added.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said earlier that progress had been made on the reopening of the Kerem Shalom border crossing for the purpose of humanitarian aid deliveries.
On Monday, Israel indefinitely closed the Kerem Shalom crossing after its Defense Ministry inspectors found several pounds of explosives hidden in a shipment headed for the West Bank.
Gaza is inhabited by 2.3 million people and the Kerem Shalom crossing is the only commercial gateway linking the Palestinian enclave with the outside world.
Israel’s full blockade of Gaza, including of food, water, medicines, fuel and electricity, has led to a humanitarian catastrophe. Some 19,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s bombardments and invasion of Gaza since October 7, some 49,000 have been wounded and 1.8 million have been displaced.

Erdogan's Communications Chief Says Israel Intimidating Journalists Covering Gaza War
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Fahrettin Altun, director of communications in Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's administration, accused Israel on Friday of harassing and threatening journalists covering the conflict in Gaza.
"Israel's violence against journalists is clearly part of their campaign to silence the international media," Altun wrote in a statement on social media.
The official said that Mustafa Maruf, a photojournalist with Turkish state news agency Anadolu, was hospitalized earlier in the day after being attacked by Israeli forces while on duty in East Jerusalem.
"We call upon all international news organizations to expose Israel for its human rights violations and campaign against journalists. All news organizations need to stand up to Israel's bullying and intimidation," Altun wrote.
The New York-based nonprofit Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Friday that the Israel-Gaza war had taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, prompting a massive retaliatory offensive against the Gaza enclave.
At least 63 media workers have died in nearly 10 weeks of war, 56 of them Palestinians, four Israelis and three Lebanese, according to the CPJ's preliminary assessment. Dozens others have been injured, arrested or reported missing.

Top German Diplomat Urges Arab Nations to Force Hamas to Sue for Peace
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Friday urged Arab countries to clearly demand that Hamas lay down its arms so that Israel would not have to "defend itself."
"Arab countries must firmly demand that Hamas lay down arms so that Israel does not have to continue defending itself so massively," Baerbock told a press conference after hosting her Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib in Berlin.
She demanded that Arab nations acknowledge the Palestinian group's actions as acts of terrorism and use all channels available to secure the release of hostages.
Israel has persistently claimed the right to self-defense since it launched a massive missile attack on the besieged Gaza Strip followed by a ground invasion, in retaliation for Hamas' surprise attack in early October. Francesca Albanese, UN rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, said in November that the claim was invalid because the threat came from a territory occupied by Israel.
