Nigerian fans celebrated on social networks as the country's women national football team, the Super Falcon, secured the 2023 Confederation of African Football award for Women's Team of the Year.According to media, the team received the award mainly due to its outstanding performance at the World Cup. While the Super Falcons dropped out of the competition in the round of 16, losing on penalty shootouts against England, the African players had no match loss record. The team drew Olympic champions Canada and co-hosts Australia, and secured a point against the Republic of Ireland."Truly an honor. According to media, the team received the award mainly due to its outstanding performance at the World Cup. While the Super Falcons dropped out of the competition in the round of 16, losing on penalty shootouts against England, the African players had no match loss record. The team drew Olympic champions Canada and co-hosts Australia, and secured a point against the Republic of Ireland.
"There is actually no match. Your World Cup display was what no African country can match easily," a fan said on X (formerly Twitter).
"Truly an honor. A year of firsts; the super falcons are special," another
football fan posted.
"Congratulations to the super falcons! Women’s National Team of the year," a netizen wrote on social networks.
The team's
