MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Abdel Fattah Burhan, the head of the Sudanese sovereignty council, and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, have agreed to hold a personal meeting, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) said on Sunday.
In late November, fighting has intensified in Sudan's Darfur region despite the parties previously announcing their readiness to negotiate. However, there is now hope for a ceasefire.
"The Assembly... welcomed and appreciated H.E. General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan... for his unequivocal assurances of his commitment to an unconditional ceasefire and resolution of the conflict through political dialogue and his agreement to the proposal by the Assembly for him to have a one-to-one meeting with the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with the facilitation of IGAD... [the Assembly welcomes Dagalo’s] acceptance of the proposals of the Assembly for an unconditional ceasefire, resolution of the conflict through political dialogue and the holding of a one-to-one meeting [with Burhan]," the IGAD said in a statement.
