The human rights doctrine has grown to be used as a tool to meddle in internal affairs and undermine the sovereignty of states, head of Russia's Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeyev said on Monday. Fadeyev added that non-governmental organizations played a special role in domestic interference. He also sounded alarm over the information environment on the internet and the US's control over it, proposing the creation of a body to monitor operations of Google and other companies to ensure user information security.

Human Rights Doctrine Used to Interfere in Countries' Domestic Affairs, Russian Official Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The official made the remark during Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual meeting with members of the Russian Human Rights Council (HRC) on the occasion of the upcoming Human Rights Day.
The human rights doctrine has grown to be used as a tool to meddle in internal affairs and
undermine the sovereignty of states, head of Russia's Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeyev said on Monday.
"In recent decades, the doctrine of human rights itself has been discredited by the West, it is leveraged to interfere in internal affairs to undermine sovereignty," Fadeyev said.
Fadeyev added that non-governmental organizations played a special role in domestic interference.
"Many of them are biased. Especially those who give countries ratings of freedom, democracy and freedom of the press, and the like. Based on these ratings, political decisions are made, including on military interventions," Fadeyev said.
He also sounded alarm over the information environment on the internet and the US's control over it, proposing the creation of a body to monitor operations of Google and other companies to ensure user information security.
"It is necessary to organize international control over the activities of IT giants [including Google], algorithms and criteria must be open, discussed and approved by international institutions. But first, an institute must be created, the task is not easy, there will be serious resistance: these are private companies, you cannot interfere in the work of private companies. It is wrong. Companies are private, but the internet is a common good," Fadeyev said.
