CAIRO (Sputnik) - Israel and Palestine began a four-day cease-fire last week to exchange some prisoners and hostages and to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. On Monday, the truce was extended for another two days.
Palestinian movement Hamas announced on Thursday the extension of the humanitarian pause in the Gaza Strip with Israel.
"An agreement was reached to extend the truce for the seventh day — Thursday," Hamas said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that the humanitarian pause, which was about to expire, will continue in light of efforts to continue the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.
On October 7, the Palestinian movement Hamas launched a surprise rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, resulting in casualties and taking captives in nearby Israeli military sites and communities. The movement cited "Israeli provocations and occupation of Palestinian territories" as the reasons for its operation, dubbed Al-Aqsa Flood.
In response, Israel launched retaliatory strikes, implemented a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, and later initiated a ground incursion into the area, home to more than 2.5 million Palestinians.

Pope Francis Reprimanded Israeli President for 'Terror' Response – Reports
Pope Francis reprimanded Israeli President Isaac Herzog over a phone call in late October for responding "to terror with terror," The Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing a senior Israeli official.
It is "forbidden to respond to terror with terror," Pope Francis said in the call, rebutting Herzog’s claim of self-defense and stating that the October 7 attackers should be held responsible for their actions, not Palestinian civilians.
The official also said that the exchange was considered too damaging to be made public and also led Israeli officials to read the pope’s November 22 public statement that the war had "gone beyond war. This is terrorism" as an echo of his private reprimand.
The Vatican also confirmed to The Washington Post that the call took place, although it did not confirm its contents and whether the pope publicly or privately views Israel’s war on Gaza as terrorism.

Israeli Ambassador to Russia Dismisses Reports of Israel's Ceasefire Violations as False
Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi on Thursday dismissed as "absolutely false" reports in the Arab media that Israel had opened fire in the Gaza Strip during the ceasefire.
"Absolutely false. We are strictly observing the ceasefire and the hostage exchange format. So that does not make any sense. It is absolutely not true," he told the Rossiya 24 broadcaster when asked if Al Arabiya's reports of the Israeli military opening massive fire to the east of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip were true.
The departure of Palestinian movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip and the enclave's initiative to normalize relations with Israel would create conditions for dialogue on resolving the conflict, the ambassador also said.
"If Hamas leaves Gaza and Gaza starts thinking about, say, the Abraham Accords, then of course there will be something to talk about," he said when asked about the Israeli leadership's position on the possibility of a political settlement in Gaza.

Truce Between Israel, Hamas Brings Results, US Hopes It Will Continue, Blinken Says
The truce between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas is bringing results and the United States hopes that this will continue to be the case, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday.
"From day one, we have been focused relentlessly on trying to secure the release of hostages from Gaza, from Hamas. And we have seen over the last week the very positive development of hostages coming home, being reunited with their families, and that should continue today. It’s also enabled a significant increase in humanitarian assistance to go to innocent civilians in Gaza who need it desperately. So this process is producing results, it’s important, and we hope that it can continue," Blinken said ahead of a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Israel.

Russia Calls for Collective Diplomatic Mechanism for Two-State Solution, UN Observers in Gaza
Russia would like to see that a collective diplomatic mechanism is established to achieve a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians and that UN military observers are deployed in the Gaza Strip, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzya said.
"In order to move toward this goal [two-state solution] alongside the efforts made to address the aforementioned acute humanitarian issues, a collective diplomatic mechanism will also need to be established," Nebenzya said during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Russian ambassador said one of the options to proceed could be by expanding the mandate of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).
"This mission has more than 200 military observers, the numbers of which could be increased and which could be deployed provided that the necessary additional resources are provided. We certainly call upon the UN Secretary General to work on this option or to propose an alternative," Nebenzia said.
