Kremlin Calls Reports on Alleged Plans to Build Tunnel Under Crimean Bridge ‘Nonsense’

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday described as "nonsense" media reports about alleged plans by Russia and China to build an underwater tunnel under the Crimean Bridge.
Earlier in the day, The Washington Post reported that Russian and Chinese business executives with government ties had allegedly held secret discussions concerning plans to build an underwater tunnel under the Crimean Bridge to create a route protected from Ukrainian attacks.
The newspaper cited emails provided to it by Ukrainian officials, who claimed that the country's security services had intercepted the communications between the business executives. Such a project could be very costly, the newspaper said, adding that, one of China's largest construction companies had reportedly agreed to take part in the project anyway.
"This is not even worth commenting on. Writing such nonsense doesn't look like The Washington Post," Peskov told reporters.
The Crimean Bridge has been a target of Ukrainian attacks since the start of Russia's military operation. Last October, a truck bomb exploded on the bridge, killing the driver and four civilians and damaging the bridge. In July, Ukraine attacked the bridge with sea drones, killing a couple who were driving across when the bridge was bombed and injuring their teenage daughter.
