The hat of French Emperor Napoleon has gone under the hammer for a record 1.9 million euros ($2 million) at an auction in the French town of Fontainebleau, the Osenat auction house said on Sunday. The lot, which is a felt triangle of gray-brown color decorated with a white-blue-red cockade, was originally estimated at 600,000-800,000 euros, the Osenat said. The hat dates from around 1810 and belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte when he ruled the French Empire in the 19th century.

The hat of French Emperor Napoleon has gone under the hammer for a record 1.9 million euros ($2 million) at an auction in the French town of Fontainebleau, the Osenat auction house said on Sunday.
"After a long struggle at auction, the hat of Emperor Napoleon I found a buyer for €1,932,000 during the sale of the Jean Louis Noisiez collection today in Fontainebleau. This is a world record for a Napoleon I hat!" the auction house said on X.
The lot, which is a felt triangle of gray-brown color decorated with a white-blue-red cockade, was originally estimated at 600,000-800,000 euros, the Osenat said.
