MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States, Israel and Palestinian movement Hamas are close to an agreement on a five-day pause in fighting in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of hostages, The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing sources.
The six-page agreement provides for a cessation of all combat operations by the parties to the conflict for at least five days and the release of 50 or more hostages, the report said, adding that the release of the hostages could begin in the coming days.
The pause will be monitored from the air, the newspaper reported.
The outline of the agreement was drawn up during weeks of negotiations in Doha between Israel, the US and Hamas, indirectly represented by Qatari mediators, the report read, citing Arab and other diplomats. It is still unclear, however, whether Israel will agree to temporarily suspend the offensive in the Gaza Strip, provided the conditions are right, the newspaper said.
On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, breaching the border and killing and taking captives in nearby Israeli military sites and communities. The movement said its operation, Al-Aqsa Flood, was in response to Israeli provocations and occupation of Palestinian territories.
Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion into Gaza, ostensibly to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.
The escalation of the conflict has resulted in the deaths of some 1,400 people in Israel and more than 12,300, including at least 5,000 children, in Gaza.

Almost Half of Israel's Spy Balloons Were Inoperable During October 7 Attack - Reports
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Three of Israel's seven reconnaissance aerostats, which could have warned the Jewish state's troops of Hamas' October 7 attack, were inoperable that day because of the government's alleged failure to upgrade and maintain the equipment, UK newspaper Daily Mail reported, citing security sources.
The inoperable spy balloons created an unprotected hole in Israel's defense line along the Gaza border, the sources said. The failure to operate the aerostats may be due to underinvestment by the authorities, they added.
The aerostats, equipped with a payload of cameras, sensors and spyware, have long been a key part of Israel's early warning system, and had they functioned, the outcome of the Hamas attack might have been different, the newspaper reported.

Israel to Allow Limited Fuel Supply to Besieged Gaza Strip - Reports
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Israel’s state security cabinet voted on Sunday to allow a limited entry of fuel into the Gaza Strip after coming under pressure from the United States, Israeli media reported.
The majority of the panel’s members supported the proposal put forward by a smaller war cabinet, comprised of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz I24News reported. The ministers of national security, finance and transport voted against.
The announcement came after more than six hours of fraught talks and signaled a policy reversal for Netanyahu’s cabinet. The far-right prime minister and his defense chief repeatedly said they would not let fuel enter the besieged enclave as long as Palestinian group Hamas held Israelis hostage.
Israel cut off all fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip at the start of the conflict with Hamas on October 7, causing the enclave’s only power plant and water treatment systems as well as hospitals and other critical facilities to shut down.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Tens of thousands of people have participated in mass rallies in the Australian cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, media reported on Sunday.
A pro-Palestinian demonstration has taken place for the sixth consecutive week at Parliament House in Melbourne, Australian broadcaster ABC reported. At the Sydney rally, protesters carried placards calling for an end to "genocide" and one of them was spotted carrying a dummy wrapped in cloth and soaked in red paint that apparently was meant to look like a child's corpse, the news.com.au portal reported.
Meanwhile, the Australian Jewish community held its own demonstrations in support of Israel counting just over 200 participants, the ABC broadcaster reported. In Sydney and Melbourne, they launched kites shaped like butterflies in the blue and white colors of the Israeli flag in support of the Israeli children kidnapped by Palestinian group Hamas.
