WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – USAID has committed to a one-year trial of resuming food assistance across Ethiopia starting next month, according to a release.
In June, the US suspended food aid to Ethiopia over an alleged massive corruption scheme by local officials to steal donated products.
"USAID is committing to a one-year trial period of the nationwide resumption, during which we will continuously monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the reforms put in place by USAID, implementing partners, and the Government of Ethiopia," USAID said in the release on Tuesday.
USAID said the decision followed "widespread and significant" structural reforms made by the government and humanitarian partners. The reforms would enable enhanced oversight and beneficiary selection to ensure the food assistance would reach the most vulnerable populations targeted.

Ethiopia’s government had also agreed to make operational changes in its work with humanitarian partners in order to improve the identification of beneficiaries based on vulnerability criteria and to provide USAID and third-party monitors with unimpeded access to review a wide range of sites across the country.
