Angola Expects to Be Invited to BRICS at Summit in Russia in 2024, Ambassador to Russia Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Luanda expects to receive an invitation to become part of the BRICS at the summit in Russia in 2024, Angolan Ambassador to Moscow Augusto da Silva Cunha told Sputnik on Monday.
More and more countries want to become members of BRICS: at the 15th summit of the group, the accession of 6 new countries was announced, including two African ones.
In June Angola's Ambassador to Moscow Augusto Da Silva Cunha told
Sputnik Africa that Angola's rapid economic growth will allow the country to join BRICS. Now, he expects that the country will be invited to the organization's summit in
2024.
"Angolan President Joao Lourenco spoke about the possibility of Angola joining the BRICS back in 2017 during the summit in Johannesburg. It is quite possible, I expect that Angola will be invited to the summit, which will be held in Russia in 2024, and during this summit the question will be raised or perhaps Angola will be invited to become part of the BRICS," the ambassador said on the sidelines of a meeting with Angolan writer Nicolau da Conceicao in the Library for Foreign Literature in Moscow.
According to the ambassador, in 2018 the Angolan president declared his readiness to do whatever it takes to join the BRICS. Rapid economic growth and the country's withdrawal from the UN list of under-developed countries will help Angola become a member of the organization, Cunha argued.
