The matter of BRICS expansion is gaining momentum. According to the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, the number of countries wishing to join BRICS is growing and has already reached almost two dozen.
Angola's rapid economic growth is a boon for the country to join the BRICS organization, Angola's Ambassador to Moscow Augusto Da Silva Cunha told Sputnik Africa in an exclusive interview.

"Angola is developing so rapidly that it is no longer classified [by the UN] as an under-developed country. And this fact is of course a very good indicator. This is exactly the factor that will allow Angola to join the BRICS," Cunha said.

The diplomat recalled that in 2018, Angola's president promised that he would do whatever was necessary to join BRICS, adding an "A" at the end of the bloc's name.
Speaking about the economic value of the BRICS, Cunha stressed that in recent years there has been a "strengthening of ties" between the members of the group, which is especially evident in "the volume of production."

"If you look at the main development goals of the BRICS, which is to strengthen the economies of the countries, the BRICS countries account for 40% of world production and 1/4 of world GDP," the envoy noted.

Another important feature of BRICS, according to the diplomat, is that the countries of the group "can set the rhythm for the development of other less-developed African countries." This is especially relevant for lowering the continent's dependence on European countries, Cunha noted.
"European countries, of course, have influence on the African continent and the commercial agreements and treaties that exist in one way or another affect African economies," the ambassador explained.
According to the politician, to turn the situation around, African countries need to start producing more, an area where the "BRICS countries can play a fundamental role."

Ukrainian Crisis

The diplomat also regarded the situation in Ukraine, noting that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine went from being local to having an international dimension and had an impact on the economies of other countries, including less-developed countries.
In this vein, the ambassador congratulated the representatives of African states for their mission to resolve the conflict.
"The idea of African leaders is to get together and agree on peace...So, of course, we support the initiative of other leaders to engage in the issue of peace stabilization," Cunha stressed.

Russia-Africa Summit

Responding to a question from Sputnik Africa about his opinion of the Russia-Africa summit to be held in July, Cunha described it as a "colossal event" that has a very important role in the geopolitical situation.
According to the diplomat, the main issues for discussion should be food and energy security. The ambassador would also like to include in the summit agenda the issue of expanding the UN Security Council and the inclusion of African countries.
Another critical point is the expansion of Russia's ties with African countries in the field of technology for the construction of infrastructure.

"With regard to Russia's industrial potential, there is also a very important issue concerning the dissemination and transfer of experience of technology information... for the development of critical industries and infrastructure in Africa," Cunha concluded.

On Wednesday, the ambassador said that Angola has simplified the process of obtaining tourist visas for Russians, it is now possible to obtain them online without a visit to the embassy.
The second Russia–Africa Summit will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia's "cultural capital", from July 26 to 29. According to the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the list of those who have already confirmed their participation is "very, very impressive."
