MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The latest Israeli-Palestinian escalation began on October 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza. Israel retaliated by bombing the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2.5 million people. The Jewish state also imposed a blockade on the Strip, cutting off water, food, medicine, electricity and fuel.
A Russian Emergencies Ministry aircraft has arrived in Egypt, it contains 25 tonnes of humanitarian aid for the population of the Gaza Strip, the ministry said on Telegram.
"The Russian Emergencies Ministry will send 25 tonnes of regular humanitarian aid to the population of the Gaza Strip [...] The ministry's Il-76 plane took off from Kazan airport. The humanitarian cargo will be delivered to the territory of the Arab Republic of Egypt and handed over to representatives of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society. They will redirect it to the population of the Gaza Strip," the ministry earlier announced.
The Russian assistance was organized on orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov.
The ministry said the humanitarian aid will include food, personal hygiene products, clothing, portable stoves and blankets.
Last week, two special flights of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations delivered 60 tonnes of humanitarian cargo for residents of the Gaza Strip, including food and personal care products.
On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, breaching the border nearby Israeli military sites and communities. The movement said its operation, Al-Aqsa Flood, was in response to Israeli provocations and occupation of Palestinian territories.
Israel declared a state of war, launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. On October 27, Israel launched a large-scale ground incursion into Gaza, ostensibly to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.
